The actual "Alice" church...now The Guthrie Center

The actual “Alice” church…now The Guthrie Center

Ever since my dad introduced me to the song, “Alice’s Restaurant” by Arlo Guthrie when I was about 11, I have wanted to buy a church so I could live in the bell tower like Alice, Ray and Potcho the dog.

Of course, I had to eventually have The Pilgrimage to the place where Alice’s Restaurant all began…the surprisingly beautiful Berkshires.  My husband obligingly drove me out to the actual church in the song (now The Guthrie Center) and even raced around with me “taking 27 8×10 colour glossy pictures with circles and arrows on the back of each one explaining what each one was…”

There are some really cool places to hang your hat (or vintage motorcycle helmet or cloche).  I love:

  • converted churches
  • railway stations
  • old schoolhouses
  • barns
  • gas stations
  • geodomes
  • earthships
  • tree houses

How about you?
